I really think a positive approach will work better than a nasty note, although that guy woulda ticked me off too.

From my experience...this is an unusual circumstance. Here in our twon we all refer to each other. During our busiest times we post an availability list by email to each other.

What I would try is hosting a get together with the other inns so everyone can meet nad network. Have a new get together at a different inn each month so everyone gets to see each other's inns. IGenerally, people won't refer to a place they have never seen. I usually don't. In fact, once everyone has seen each other's inns you can find the best fit for guests that call and you can't accomodate. I really think a positive approach will work better than a nasty note, although that guy woulda ticked me off too.

I don't believe a snippy letter would help. Some innkeepers suspect you may be trying to steal their customers from them. I think the best way to get referrals is to give them. Even if it is to a hotel. So let your competitors know you have sent them customers, if their smart they will return the favor. Do you want your B&B to succeed or do you want most B&B's to succeed.
In summary I would refer to those who refered customers to me. My aim would be to make my Inn sucessful and if the other guy does better then their smarter than you.
