1. How long have you been in the B&B and/or hospitality business?
We are in our 15th season this summer of 2005.
2. What is your favorite part of the job?
I enjoy meeting people from other places in Canada and around the world. The
part I enjoy is getting up early each morning and baking fresh cinnamon
rolls , biscuits and muffins for the guests.
3. What is your least favorite part of the job?
Doing up the rooms before the next guests appear at the end of the day.
4. What is your best marketing tip?
Make your guests feel at home in your home-they will spread the word.
5. Do you have a staff or do everything yourself? .
When I have only one or two rooms rented, I am able to do the work myself.
More than two rooms, I call in a friend who cleans for me.
6. What type of marketing do you find most effective?
The internet is very effective. Also, the local tourist association is great
at doing publicity for our B&B owners.
7. Do you attend seminars? Buy B&B Guides?
I do have a selection of B&B guides, but there is not an opportunity in our
region to attend seminars.
8. Which recipe do you always get rave reviews for?
My cinnamon rolls are the favourite of all the guests. They make great
comments about them in the guest book.
9. If you weren’t a B&B Innkeeper what would you be doing?
I’d have more time to read and visit friends etc.
10. Tell us about your most memorable guest?
The tour de l’isle de Montreal passed through our region a couple of years
ago. I had 9 guests that night. The rain we experienced was simply a deluge.
The cyclists arrived one after the other during the afternoon-drenched. I
met each at the door with towels and a hot cup of tea or coffee. They were
happy to come in out of the rain, so to speak.
11. Do you have any horror stories from past guests?
Only one- a young girl registered and wanted to borrow a book-I let her read
it, of course, but lo and behold, she was ready to take it with her the next
day-It wa not a magazine or a paperback, but a cherished book ,so I had to
ask her to give it back.
12. What do you think the biggest misconception is about staying at a B&B?
That the price is negotiable-some people haggle over the price-I let them
know that the prive is fixed, and a bargain at that.
13. What would you like to change about the industry?
I’d like to see more people be encouraged to at least try out a B&B and see
what they are missing. I’m sure that they would enjoy the opportunity of
being a guest-and not just a customer.
14. Do you have any time saving tips or marketing treasures that you would
like to share?
Post your expectations at the entry door referring to departure times and
breakfast times. This will make them aware of your agenda when they
register. Also , in each room place a selection of tourist ideas for the
region. Also a list of restaurants for them to choose from.
15. What makes your B&B unique?
Our pastries are all freshly baked every morning. We use our own farm fresh
eggs to enhance the quality of the muffins etc. Our newly constructed dining
solarium allows guests a panoramic view of the water.
